We celebrate Mothering Sunday on 14th March 2021, a celebration honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood . We usually give our mothers a Mothers Day card and some flowers and often get together for a meal.
In the US, the origins of Mother’s Day are quite clear. A woman named Anna Jarvis started a campaign for an official holiday honoring mothers in 1905, the year her own mother died. Over the next few years, Jarvis campaigned to have the holiday officially recognized, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday, to take place the second Sunday of May.
However, In the UK, we celebrate Mothering Sunday, which has far more traditional origins. On this day, each Church would hold a service to honor and appreciate mothers and with the birth of young. It is a time to celebrate spring and appreciate rebirth. The servants and apprentices were allowed home on this day to see their mothers, often this was the only opportunity to do so in the whole year. It is not know if these two were related or just a happy coincidence.
In the UK and Ireland, this date changes, depending on the dates of Easter. It always takes place on the 4th Sunday of the holy month of Lent.
The US and the rest of Europe will celebrate Mother’s Day on the 2nd Sunday in May, which is a day simply dedicated to mothers and motherhood.
Fathers day, a celebration honoring and celebrating fathers and fatherhood, takes place on the 3rd Sunday of June in most of the world.
